Lost one star for "no water level indicator" and "no handle on top to help move it around" (you have to hold both the bottom and top at the same time when moving it around if you do) , also would have liked other color choices (like tan, brown or blue).

HOWEVER it is a GREAT QUIET unit... and I don't mean quiet like almost no noise except for a terrible high pitched whine (like the Vicks has) --- no, I mean nearly SILENT. The only noise is an almost imperceptable motor noise that your head has to be right up to the unit to even hear. So it noise is your concern this is the unit to buy.

The controls are simple. One button and one light for everything. See a sort of bright green light - it's on low. See a very bright green light - it's on high. See a white light - it's on automatic(will keep the room at 55% humidity or so which is ideal. See a red light? That means it's out of water.(but I'd still like a water level indicator)

I love this thing. It's quiet and can humidify to the point of comfort for an average sized bedroom or small office. This will NOT humidify your whole house or whole lower floor if you have an open floor plan...but my needs are small.

It's bigger than I thought - about the size of a large shoebox turned on end.

The mist that comes out is nearly invisible, but it does a great job.

This is a really nice, high-end humidifier that is suitable for whole-house humidification (for a small house) or humidifying large living areas (the manual says 860 square feet).

Things I like:

*The unit puts out a HUGE plume of vapor. On high, it's almost like a fog machine . It shoots up in the air a couple of feet above the unit, then dissipates by the time it falls a foot or so below the unit. It's really impressive in action.
*The vapor smells fresh.
*The unit is sleek and modern, and the blue tank light (which can be turned off) looks cool at night.
*The display automatically dims in a darkened room.
*There are handles both on top of the tank and on the underside.
*No white residue.
*Low power consumption (when used on cool mist).
*It's silent.
*It took a couple of days, but it eventually humidified our entire house (far larger than it's rated for) with the unit running about ten feet away from the furnace intake.

Things I don't like:

*It was a little intimidating to get started with it. The demineralization cartridge was screwed on too tightly, so I had to get my husband to help me get it off. The directions, though they feature lots of pictures, could have been better. In a diagram, it makes it look like the hydro cell is somehow attached to the demineralization cartridge, but I guess you just plunk it into the tank to float around? Then there are lots and lots of buttons and controls. It all turned out to be a lot more simple than I thought, once I got it going, but the intimidation factor for me was initially quite big.

I've owned several humidifiers over the years and this is by far the least messiest one to refill. I've had humidifiers with filters and without filters and they all dripped or spilled when you lifted the container out to refill it. I learned to always, ALWAYS place my humidifier on a tray and keep a roll of paper towels nearby when refill time comes.

This is the ONLY humidifier I've owned that stays dry when I pick up the reservoir! Could have knocked me over with a feather the first time I needed to refill it - I though something was broken! When it comes to "neatness" during a refill - this humidifier rates 10 stars!

The reservoir is big (which I expected & wanted) and it's a bit of a tight fit in my bathroom sink - but the container stands up flat on the counter, so if you need to fill it with a pitcher there won't be any problems (unlike many a curved top I've fought with over the years).

When I first opened the box I thought - this is going to be a pain to clean (the MAIN reason I got rid of my last humidifier) -- until I noticed that it ... deconstructs. You can take the back tower assembly out of the bottom with just a twist of your wrist. Cool beans. No matter how hard I try, over years of use, a lot of grime/gunk/lord-knows-what accumulates in nooks and crannies that I just can't scrub out (who the heck designs those things - someone who never cleans one?!). I haven't done a deep-deep cleaning on this yet, but it looks like there's fewer nooks and crannies to worry about.

So...so far it's 10 stars...until it's one and - unfortunately - serious flaw. It's noisy. VERY noisy. All humidifiers gurgle from time to time. This one doesn't gurgle, it belches - loudly.

My wife and I not only love, but NEED our Vornado Evap3. We live in Arvada, Colorado. Altitude, high. Winter, DRY! Without some sort of humidification when our forced air furnace kicks in, well, I can tell you that dry and irritated sinuses hurt! A lot!

The Vornado "lives" in our bedroom. And on the low fan setting, we don't even know it's there. Well, that's not quite true; the blue light can be a bit of a bother. But what price do you put on the ability to breathe freely and wake up without bleeding sinuses? And the Vornado is our third humidifier brand, and the only one we recommend.

Oh, yes - I have one strong suggestion: get some grapefruit seed extract. Yep. Grapefruit seed extract. Put 6 to 8 drops in every container of water. No smell, no mold, no germs.
We give the Vornado 4 out of 5 stars only because there is no auto-shutoff when it runs out of water. Manufacturer, take note, please. . .

This humidifier was purchased at Target 12/27/2012 for $29.99. It has been in use day and night as of today's date of 01/04/2013. The features that are quite pleasing are:
1) It's quiet enough for me and I am sensitive to sounds. There is a slight high-pitched sound of the motor, nebulizer, or something that can be heard if the room is quiet and it is even 2 feet away. At the moment it sits on my office desk as I am typing this review and this sound can be heard. But it has never disturbed sleep or concentration for the sound is pleasant.
2) It's blue night light can be turned off.
3) Although it is cone-shaped and requires turning it upside down for filling, it has a good balance making it easy with no problems of managing it or of dripping. Another reviewer mentioned overfilling may render it unable to mist even though it sounds like it is misting. I experienced that & immediately thought, "Oh, no, a dud." But mechanically- minded hubbie removed the water tank, removed water from the base of the tank (not the water reservoir) as it was too full, pushed ON button, and out came the mist. That has not happened again.
4) The mist quickly disperses with no build up or wetness created on any surface. It is used at night placed on the floor beside my bed and adequately provides enough moisture to help with relieving winter dryness of my body.

Researching humidifiers on Amazon was a somewhat tiresome exercise. Almost all products I looked at are subject to very serious complaints, most importantly noise, leakage, and lack of reliability. I decided to go with the AOS 7147 because most reviewers agree that it is really quiet, and because I liked the clean look and the features.

Here is what I can report after about a week of usage (will update if anything changes over time):

Noise level: Both my wife and I are extremely noise sensitive, but this unit can operate in our bedroom without affecting our sleep. Yes, there is a bit of a humming noise, but it is barely audible. Also there is a bubbling noise once in a while when water flows out of the tank into the tray. All-in-all, it seems about as quiet as can reasonably be expected.

Effectiveness: We use the auto setting that lets the device decide the target level of humidity and the output level. This works very well and hassle free, keeping the room comfortably moist.

Warm mist setting: I would recommend having it. Without it the room feels cool and damp. Even with using it there is a bit of a cooling effect, but it is acceptable.

Filtering/water treatment: We did not see any white dust around the unit, which was a concern.

Reliability/ease of use: No problems so far, straight-forward to operate, everything works as intended. I will post updates, if something comes up.

Look: Matters more than you would think, because it is supposed to be three feet away from the ground and away from both heating and return vents. Inevitably it will end up in a rather visible place. This unit has a bit of a techy, but overall relatively neutral look, better than most.

In summary, I am very happy with this unit.

This is a fantastic humidifier. I've owned a number of humidifiers over the years and this is the best one yet. I bought this to put in my son's room as he has been getting bloody noses and it has completely done the trick. In the winter this thing is going every night for 4 months as it also helps with his breathing. It's extremely quiet and I like the fact that I don't have to buy any filters or replacement wicks. The tank is low profile so I have no problem filling it in the bathroom sink versus having to use the tub spout like I had to do on some of my other humidifiers. The night light is a great feature for kids and it produces just enough light without being too bright. It has an adjustable mist dial so you can control the amount of mist, mine is usually cranked on high but I like the option of being able to adjust it. It also has an option of doing cool mist or warm mist which a lot of units don't have. Last but not least it comes with a cool little cleaning brush that stores on the underside of the tank, it's perfect to get into the tiny little crevices to keep this clean. It arrived in perfect condition via Amazon prime and was easy to open with minimal packing materials to dispose of.

My wife bought this little steam inhaler for me a few years back because she thought it might help relieve my headaches after I noticed that a long, hot shower would bring me pain relief. A real miracle in my opinion! I don't know what kind of headaches I get (sinus? maybe) but whenever they're bad, I use this little guy, and I would say 95% of the time, within 20 minutes of inhaling the steam, the headache is GONE. I can't say this will work for your headaches, but it has for me and it lets me start functioning again. Just be careful when you first use it - you need to adjust the opening for the right amount of steam and gauge how close you get to the facepiece so you don't burn yourself, because the water is literally boiling. I'm ordering another one for the office. Good luck!
